As
we age and our teeth shift, a gap between the teeth may suddenly
appear. If you have a tooth extracted which is not immediately
replaced with an teeth implant or bridge, your entire bite may shift
dramatically. The teeth surrounding this missing tooth may shift
toward each other, creating a gap between the teeth. It's not at all
unusual for a person who had a terrific smile her entire life to
suddenly notice she now has gapped teeth.
For
some, a very small gap between the front teeth can be charming, even
attractive. Anything larger than the faintest of gaps, however, is
usually regarded as unsightly. Of course, gaps that occur between
teeth other than the two front teeth are completely undesirable. For
instance, a gap between an incisor and a canine is quite noticeable,
and very clumsy looking.
Reasons
why gap may form:
- Tumor growths.A gap can be a sign of a serious medical or dental condition. Tumor growths may need to be treated surgically.
- Gum disease.Gum disease, which results in a loss of bone that supports the teeth, may be prevented by regular brushing and flossing. However, if a gap is forming as a result of gum disease, you need to see your dentist as soon as possible.
- Self-inflicted behavior. These gaps occur when people push their tongue against their front teeth when swallowing or as a result of ‘mouth jewelry’. This pushes teeth forward and makes small gaps bigger. Again, if a small gap is getting bigger, have your dentist check it.
A
fixed bridge relies on the structure of the neighbouring teeth
adjacent to the gap to act as anchors for crowns to "bridge"
the gap. This requires the reduction of healthy tooth tissue. The
bridge is only as strong as the supporting teeth, and if one of the
supporting teeth were to be damaged in the future or undergo decay,
the integrity and strength of the bridge would also be lost.
Veneers
are commonly used to close a gap between two front teeth (diastema),
but if the gap is too large, the veneers used to the close the gap
will be disproportionately wide compared to the rest of the natural
teeth. This could leave the smile looking unnatural, whereas one of
the aims of cosmetic dentistry is to create a beautiful and natural
look
The
most conservative and minimally invasive way to close a small gap is
orthodontic treatment, either using conventional fixed braces, or
invisible braces such as the Invisalign system. There are many
different types of braces available, such as lingual braces, the
Inman aligner, Damon braces etc. They all serve one purpose: to apply
pressure to the teeth to encourage them to move closer together to
close the gap.
Dentists
use the term "diastema" to refer to a space (gap) that lies
between two teeth.
Tooth bonding provides one way a dentist can close a
diastema. It can be placed on the two teeth that lie on each side of
the gap so to reduce the gap's overall width.
